Day four of computer science education week continued with a day full of robotics in the STEM lab. Mrs. Tiberio and Mrs. Aniszewski's classes created and programmed Lego robots. Mrs. Liberator's class learned to use color and line coding to program Ozobots. Miss Bartok's class used play-based Cubetto robots for a tactile, screen free introduction to coding. Why are children learning to code? Coding builds thinking skills, increases problem solving abilities, allows student to be creative, fosters collaboration, improves computational thinking, teaches digital literacy, prepares students for technology skills they may need in the future, and encourages persistence and perseverance.

Computer Science week means coding in Mrs. Zappie's Media classes! This week, we focus on Loops (repeat blocks) in our Java block code. They are bright pink and a coder's best friend...once they get in the habit of using them! Take a look at some students using Loops!

Today was day two of Computer Science Education week. Mrs. Tamburlin's class used iPads to code Dash robots, making them walk, turn, talk, and dance. Ms. Hamlet's first grade learned to use color and line codes to program Ozobots with a holidays around the world theme.

December 5-11 is Computer Science Education Week. Brocton Elementary is celebrating this week through coding lessons with Mrs. Zappie in computer class and activities in the STEM lab that are introducing coding with robotics. Throughout the week classrooms will visit the STEM lab for an Hour of Code robotics activity. Today, Miss Glasier and Mrs. Mutch's classes coded with Ozobots. Mrs. Muck's class used Lego WeDo kits to build and code Lego robots. Mrs. Marvin's class programmed Circuit Playground electronics to light up and make sound and used coding to fly Airblock Drones.

The kindergarten classrooms participated in a distance learning event with other schools in the state of New York. The classes read a book called Turkey Trouble, a story about a turkey that disguises himself as a other animals. After the story, the children came up with other ideas of what the turkey could be disguised as and then in the STEM lab disguised paper turkeys using craft supplies. This week they video conferenced with a another school who did the same project and played a guess the turkey 20 questions game using coordinate grids with digital images of their turkeys. The classes also taught each other about their communities. Our students were surprised to learn that the one town (Elwood) from Long Island has a splash pad park! This BOCES sponsored project helped build communication skills through a project that integrated multiple subjects. Everyone had a great time and we are planning more distance learning and pen pal activities with our new kindergarten friends from across the state!
