    Information For Parents
     2017-2018

☺Our classroom is expected to be a caring, safe and supportive environment which promotes risk-taking and fosters learning for all students. If your child is having a problem in school, or perhaps at home which may cause a distraction in school, please make me aware of the situation. If we're able to deal with a situation in the early stages, it tends to be much more manageable.

☺Resource time is given each day (approximately 30 minutes).  This is a work time and offers your child the opportunity to seek help with any assignments.  A student who uses this time wisely will often have considerably less work to bring home.  Keep in mind that your child may have homework on a daily basis and should be reading at least 20 minutes each night.

☺Throughout much of the year, your child will be seated in a team of 3-4 students and teams will be rearranged approximately every 6-8 weeks.  The purpose of using cooperative learning is to prepare children for success in school by building good social skills and also for future success in the real world (job placement).  Cooperation and teamwork is the goal for this classroom.  It is essential for students to learn to work well and get along with others.

☺Classroom jobs are auctioned off every Monday.  Teams may bid on these jobs using the tickets they earn for good behavior and teamwork throughout the week.

☺Assignments will be recorded in your child’s agenda each night along with their spelling lists.  Your child should bring agenda home and back to school each morning. They have also been given a two pocket homework folder that should contain all their homework, even the completed work. This way you're able to see that is actually done. The #1 comment I hear from parents every year is that their child tells them they either don't have homework or they finished it and it's in school. Check their folder and agenda please!

☺If you need to contact me about assignments due to your child’s absence, or any other concern, you may contact me personally at 792-2127 (although this number may not work during the school day).  If I am unavailable, please leave a message on voice mail and I will return your call as soon as possible. You may also contact me by email at kpurcell@broc.wnyric.org.  I have found that this can be the most efficient, albeit impersonal, form of communication.

☺Please make sure your child eats breakfast each morning as there will be no snack time this year due to our earlier lunch time.  Breakfast is available in the cafeteria from 8:35 – 8:55 daily.

Thank you for all your anticipated support. I look forward to a successful and enjoyable school year!
